The World Cup

Under pressure people do things that they would not normaly do, there is a lot at stake this is the world cup.

Vive la France

I'm not sure about that. Apart from Ian Wright, Gerrard was critisised almost unanimously.

that wasn't a world cup game though,

ok, its the World Cup Final, score is 0 - 0, dying seconds of extra time, Rooney storms into the box, defender tries to nick the ball, Rooney falls over clutching his leg, ref points to the spot, Beckham puts it away, England win the World Cup, but replays show that there was no contact between the defender and Rooney. What do you do, go out and celebrate the victory, or hang your head in shame.

well argentina done that against us with the "hand of God".

i would rather see england win it fairly but i wouldnt complain if some took a dive and won the match with a penalty. owen dives alot too.

That's a good question!

I think I'd feel it was a hollow victory. I know it might sound a bit pompous, but I really genuinely want to see England play with both integrity and style.

but you'd still go out and celebrate. The tabloids would justify it by pointing back to the Hand of God incident...especially if it happened against Argentina...in fact, I would positively encourage cheating against Argentina!

I can't believe we've got two whole days without any games! What am I going to do with myself?

Obvious glaring error points to the fantasy of the situation...

There is a difference between "winning a free kick" (eg pushing the ball on so the opponent tackles 'late' so giving away the kick, or any other myriad techniques) and deliberately attempting to get a player booked or sent off by feigning injury or contact.

The former is fine IMHO, the latter is not.

Gerrard's dive was terrible, and I'd think it a hollow victory in the situation you describe.

Predictions for Portugal? I think we're going to get thrapped unfortunately...

Can anyone tell me what is diving in soccer? I am a bit of a n00b when it comes to technical aspects of this sport.

Thx.

Practice the most popular sport in the world (you know... ). Hehe...

It's throwing your to the ground in an attempt to con the referee that you have been fouled.

There are basically three types of dive:

1. Going down with no contact whatsoever. Blatant - and therefore risky.

2. Receiving minimal contact and going down. (Harder to detect.)

3. Initiating contact and then going down. Example: the Italian who saw that Lucas Neill of Australia had gone to ground and deliberatley ran into him then fell over, to make it look like he'd been tripped.

There's no way England makes it to the final, they don't finish as a team, Beckham just pulls them up with a goal and they manage to sit on it. Brazil looks a bit sloppy as well. I, myself, am waiting for the Argentina-Germany game which looks to be quality soccer.

i think england is going to beat portugal and france (if they beat brazil). dont think we can beat brazil if we dont step up our game.

beckham should make way for lennon. lennon made a big impact on the game when he came on.

you have to be kidding. damn cheese-loving surrender monkeys. i hate them. goits the lot of them! next time im on the continent im going to steal alsace-llorraine

football is on today!!! at last...

my predicitions...

germany 1-2 argentina (germany to score first)
italy 2-0 ukraine

and tmoro

england 2-1 portugal (england score first)
brazil 3-1 france (brazil score first (ronaldo))

Cool it with the abuse mate. You wouldn't like it if people started banging on about how they hate us.

(Besides, what you said doesn't make a right lot of sense! We eat cheese too! )

Anyway, my predictions:

Argentina will beat Germany without breaking sweat.

Italy will nick one against Ukraine after beseiging their area for at least 90 minutes.

Portugal will beat England, possibly after extra time, after England finally start to play some football. (Hope I'm wrong on the first bit, but not the second!)

Brazil will beat France on penalties.

I hope Argentina will win. I think they are the team that has a shot against Brazil. But I have a feeling that the refs will mess this one up.

Italy will win, but I'm sure something shady will happen. History has repeated itself a few times already. Might as well make it a 3peat.

I have a feeling Portugal will beat England but I hope not. England still hasn't played it's best so I'd like to see them do that before they go.

Brazil should win. I hate France as a team. They have a couple of guys that I consider class, but I legitimately HATE Patrick Vieira!! Sorry, old wounds die hard.
