i looked up the lyrics to this song and it makes sense to a point. the order goes:
fly, spider, bird, cat, dog, goat, cow, horse;
now why would she swallow a goat to catch a dog, a cow to catch a goat, and a horse to catch cow?

myself being a dog whisperer know that dogs are quite frightened by goats, so that clears up that answer.

and the cow, well, I suppose she is aware that goats also give milk and does not want to have her "services" reduced because of milk-lovers unfaithfulness to cows (for they are now faithful to goats)

finally, a horse to get the cow because the horse is like the lion of the farm animals, and he does not want any havoc amongst the citizens of the barn...

also, I'm not REALLY a dog whisperer, but that was the only logical response I could come up with, you see

there was never a goat, and she swallowed the dog to catch the cat, and she swallowed the cow to catch the dog (i don't know why it says in the lyrics) and she wanted to die so she swallowed a horse?????
