In both climbing and lifting I've used chalk (so about 4 years of chalk use lol!) and I can't stand the blocks, I personally love the 'garlic'* chalk, easier, less messy and you get a good even coating. Used liquid chalk for a while but its a hit pricey when a garlic or powder is like 80p.
Just my opinion FWIW, hope it makes you feel a bit better.
*a garlic is chalk in a net ball, so called because it looks like a giant bit of garlic.
Oh yeah, and we used to throw them at each other when we were bouldering. great wind up, but I doubt it'll make you many friends at the gym
