this might be a newbie question but what is halo ODST?

what is the difference between halo 3 and halo 3 ODST, is it a new format or something also what is GOTY i have heard of this most often when talking about oblivion.
 
It's the prequel to the whole Halo series. You play as a rookie shock trooper in the elite Orbital Drop Shock Troopers. As for GOTY, I can't quite help you there.

GOTY stands for "Game of the Year."

Halo 3: ODST is an overrated, overpriced $60 expansion pack for Halo 3.
Basically, it's Halo 3, but it replaces Halo 3's normal campaign with a far shorter and dull one.
