Throbbing pain in right ear?

I've had a cold for a few days now, and mild ear pain was associated until I woke up at 3 am with the worst earache of my entire life. I can't lay down, and standing up doesn't help much either. I put in a few ear drops and that doesn't even soothe it. I'm wondering what I should do... I've never experienced pain like this before.
