Torrent downloads not working?

I have bought a new Laptop (a Dell Inspiron N5030) and have since installed uTorrent and Mozilla firefox. I cannot download many torrents and those few that do download go at unreasonably slow speeds (10-20 kps).

This is NOT a problem of internet speed, router speed, computer speed (the laptop is brand new and has 3GB of ram) or connection. Any and all other downloads come down at normal speeds (200+ kps), it is definitely a problem to do with torrenting.

I run the latest version of Firefox (3.6.13) and the latest version of uTorrent (2.2).
Sorry, does anybody have any suggestion as to what could be causing these problems and what I can do about it?

Make sure there are enough seeds for what your downloading.
Open utorrent and check the ports are open.
Make sure your firewall is allowing utorrent and the ports under exceptions.
Open utorrent click on options-preferences-bandwidth then look at the bottom where it states Number of connections.Change both global maximum and maximum number to around 500.

Have you checked to see how many people are seeding the torrent that you are trying to download? If there aren't many, try finding another one with more seeders.

Also, while downloading a torrent in uTorrent, you can right-click on the name of the file, go to "Bandwidth Allocation," then select "High."
