Toshiba Satellite A300 Screen Problems...?

We have the Toshiba Satellite A300 and lately the screen light flickers and goes out but you can faintly see the LCD behind...Then we put it on sleep mode, goes back on the flickers off. What could we do to fix it ourselves or where is a store we can take it to that can fix it?
