Tottenham Riots

At 9:51pm on Birmingham riots 2011 at tumblt dot com:

Heard from two insiders that the Police are now fully authorised to use attack dogs and rubber bullets on all rioters and looters.

Sweet!

9:55pm
Windmill Market in Smethwick is being smashed up by a group of people with baseball bats. I live over the road from it.

Sounds like a normal night after the pubs close.

That's funny. The police don't use rubber bullets any more They now use baton rounds instead.

Oh my god...I really hope they don't start rioting in Portsmouth.
There could literally be tens of pounds worth of damage!

Either way, the Guardian have reported that there are firearms units equiped with baton rounds on the street, and apparently they were out on the streets on Monday to. Here's the article: http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2011-08/09/rubber-bullets

I doubt we'll see them used for some time yet though, the police seem extremely reluctant to use them.

Oh and "baton round" covers plastic, rubber and wax rounds apparently

The police would love the use them - the Chiefs are the ones reluctant too

I don't get invited any more. There was the incident with the duck, then with Tony's wife, and the champagne heresy we just don't talk about any more.

I have tartar sauce.

Yes - but then you have to put them into cold storage for soylent green. My way you just grind them down when convenient.

Nope. Just pretty enough to pass for one. If it weren't for the beard that is.

And score one for me.

I'm happy to let them do what they want - all they need to do is pay for it (student loans do count as paying in this context). If they're going to spend years of their life studying something, it should be something they value enough to put money down on it.

I should've phrased that differently - expertise/skill-based. Of course the rest of the world isn't in quite as bad a state as the USA on this one. Their patent system is somewhat of a travesty against common sense and morality.

Again, the American patent system is sickening and broken. I'm not going to argue with that. The lawyers profit though - we could become a nation of lawyer/mercenaries?

Well the police this morning on Sky news categorically stated they do not use rubber bullets but use baton rounds instead. So clearly at least the top bras in the Met police draw some line of distinction. The effect of course will be the same. Some idiot trigger happy police officer will fire one off at extreme close range and kill someone and then all this violence will some how have been justified.

You're missing the point though. When information is your product you can only profit from controlling the free flow of that information. Operating within the confines of a single nation severely limits the value of information. So information economies need to spread their "values" across the globe. Which is what large multi-national American firms are doing right now. They are the reason copyright and IP keeps being raised time and again in parliaments around the world. They are the reason the EPO wants to copy the USPTO's business model.

Skills? What skills? In any given work force you're either skilled at manual/engineering tasks or information/management tasks. You can't build a healthy economy with only one skill set. You need a mix and that's what we're lacking right now.

haha am I the only one who herd a Scottish accent when they seen the in and the house rammed together so brashly at the end of the sentence, stay inthahoose.

and wow wanderli silva who has as anyone who follows his twitter account will tell you a rudimentary grasp of written English at best has managed to out do the media of this country by referring to these riots correctly as English and not British or uk wide.

For anyone reading reports that star city or the fort shopping centre is on fire (it's all over fb/twitter) they're not , it's a scrap yard in the area.

Anyone rioting in Glasgow has a fetish for hoof prints on their ass.

Strathclyde police don't come to play and Scottish people don't whine when a copper crowns a wee ned.

The Bear.

Hahaha am I the only one who actually likes Portsmouth? I grant you the "city" title is crap compared to places like Southampton but come on, we have a tower! And boaties!

Could be, or it could just be that England is synonymous with Britain in America and was over here until the last century or so.

There were reports of a car set on fire in Whitley near Reading, and 2 other cars turned over.

Everyone I know from Reading has said "So isn't that a normal night for Whitley?"
