You want to keep your cadence up 70-90 Rom's or higher. Don't worry about the speed if you are able to vary the resistance. You want to be able to finish a race so endurance is important. You want to find the cadence and resistance where your breathing is fast enough to be able to talk but not sing and your legs are not hurting. You can up the resistance for short periods of time to simulate climbing a hill and back it off to recover.

What kind of speed should I average on a trainer in preparation for racing? I tend to maintain 35-40kph for about 30-60 minutes. Is that sufficient? Should I work more on upping the speed or duration?
Thanks!
Added note I'm really nervous about racing so I wanna make sure I'm in good enough shape to keep up, hence my question.
