Truck wouldn't start yesterday, started today but after a popping sound?

Yesterday my 2001 Dodge Durango wouldn't start. Today it started with a popping sound, like it backfired but it was coming from the engine! What could be wrong? This would be the first time this has ever happened.

popping sounds usually indicate valve stuck in open position...remove rocker cover and watch ...or compression test will reveal bank if v8

is it running alright now or is it still poping guessing it could have been a bad fuel thing if its running now try a bottle of fuel treatment might help if not might be timing
