Trying too figure out what area of san diego to move too?

I am looking at moving to san Diego area in the spring I've done research on it but am looking for an area that would be a fit for me. I am in my 20s I am looking for somewhere pretty close to the beach. Where I can meet people I grew up in new York so I understand that it is a city but I also don't want to have too worry about my safety everytime I walk outside. I am looking too spend a thousand or less a month and am willing to split a house/apartment with roommates thank you very much for all your help
