UBS car stereo as Xmas present? Will it fit any car?

I think my boyfriend has a Renault... I'm TOTALLY clueless when it comes to cars. Obviously, I will be able to check when I see him next but can I buy a car stereo for his car and will he be able to just plug it in? He's pretty good with electrics and stuff but is it like 'on e size fits all' or what? I want to get him a usb car stereo so that he doesn't have to burn cd's.
 
There are different sizes and adaptor required to physically fit it and to get it to work with the cars dashboard displays - something like a halfords voucher to get one himself would be more sensible.
 
When he's not looking, have a look at the exact make and model of the car (it's usually on the boot lid) and the year of it (on the reg plate) and ask again.
They tend to be a universal fit as far as size goes, but you often need a particular adaptor kit to fit a particular model of car, so you need to know.
