Unlocked Tmobile motorola cliq wont get 3G on straight talk. Why not?

I was reading that only AT&T phones unlocked can get 3G from straight talk. But my phone is unlocked and i can make the phone think its AT&T if i want. I tried to put the phone in 3G mode and it will always stay in automatic mode. It is android 1.6. wont let me do only 2G or 3G.
