Unsupported file type on a Divx converter.?

I downloaded an .avi movie and i wanted to burn it to a dvd-r...to play on my dvd player it has to be converted to a divx, i have a divx converter from divx.com but when i clicked and dragged the file it said "UNSUPPORTED FILE TYPE...DivX does not support this file type, please make sure the imput is a supported imput for DivX converter"

whats that mean isnt it supposed to convert .avi files? what do i do to get this converted so i can watch it either on my computer of dvd player that has divx? is there another program which will convert this /avi...its a dvdscreener.
