Upgrading to 4.1 iOS? (ipod 3g, noob question)?

I want to upgrade to 4.1 iOS from 3.1.3 (jailbroken, 32gb ipod 3g), could someone please show me how to do so? in itunes it only lets me upgrade to 4.2, and i've heard that the only jailbreak for 4.2 is tethered, so 4.1 seems like the best option. if someone could show me how or direct me to a guide or something would be awesome and greatly appreciated.

so this is what your going to have to do its a bit of a mission
First go: http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/ and download the Ipod touch 3g 4.1 (which is what you want )
Now get tiny umbrella from :http://thefirmwareumbrella.blogspot.com/2010/05/tinyumbrella-unified-tinytss-and.html once you have that plug in you ipod and open tinyumbrella. In tiny umbrella you should see the name of your ipod clock on it and press the save shsh button.

1) Go to http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/ and download the 3.1.2 firmware for your device
2) Go to Start, All Programs, Accessories and then right-click on Notepad, and click 'Run as Administrator'.
3) When the Notepad opens up click file and Open
4) When Windows Explorer opens up paste: C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\ into the address bar
5) Click on the drop down box in the lower right hand corner and select All Files
6) Open the Hosts file and paste: 74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com at the bottom line of the file
7) Click File and Save and then close out of Notepad
8) Plug in your device and open iTunes
9) Click on your device in the left hand pane and then hold the shift key and click on restore
10) Select the firmware you downloaded and saved to your desktop and your device will start to restore to 3.1.2

1015 Error Fix:

1. First off, make sure you are getting error 1015 in itunes and not some other random one. After confirming, close itunes.(leave iphone plugged in with connect to itunes screen showing)

2. download this old quickpwn file:

3. extract it and run quickpwn. You should get a box saying something like 'your phone needs to be powered on, please hold the home button and sleep\wake button for 15 seconds'. Just do what it says- EXACTLY. When you see the apple logo, press OK. A blue box will appear after, just press OK to that as well.

4. Your phone should now boot normally. when it does,CLOSE QUICKPWN, IT IS NOT USED TO JAILBREAK
