i plan on installing a vent in my bathroom to vent it outside. my house is old and the bathroom never had one causing mold on the ceiling. i wanted to go strait outside with the pipe. the direction the pipe has to go is in the same direction the joist are going so it would be following the joist. is there like an end cap joist going the other way? like the way walls are framed but on the ceiling? if so i think my house has 2x10 joist would it be possible to cut a 4 inch hole in the joist for the vent pipe or will this mess up the structure as it is an outside wall so I'm guessing it has to be load bearing. if i cant do this how else could i vent the fan to the outside without ripping down too much drywall as it is old construction?
i just measured the joist in the basement they are 9.5 so i guess 2x10 i would assume they are the same size on the first floor as well. also its the first floor bathroom of a 2 story house so going out the roof isn't an option i have to vent it out of the side of the house so can i get a reducer and use a 3 inch vent being that its a 2x10 or is that too small of a pipe to use with a bath exhaust fan because from what i understand it seems i can cut a 3 inch hole if its a 2x10 right?
