Verizon Wireless phone programming, any way to bypass?

I have Verizon Wireless Service, with Unlimited Text Messaging, Picture mail, and I share 700 minutes a month. I have an LG EnV 2 (VX9100), and I wanted a new phone. So my friend upgraded recently to a 3G phone, the Kin 2, I believe. So he gave me his old phone, an LG Voyager (VX10000). I called *228, which is programming for the phones. It said it failed, so I took it to a Verizon store. They said I need a $10 minimum coverage plan, but my uncle, who also works for Verizon, says it's an in-between phone, that it should let me switch. Is there a way I can switch my service to the Voyager without the minimum coverage plan? Thanks
