want to burn much .avi to player dvd dl. when i convert to mpeg files get huge. how

to fit more on to dvd? new at burning dvds for the tv player. converter changes 350mg .avi to 15000 mb mpeg. looking for freeware or am i doing something wrong. unsure about bit rate for both audio and video. I'm newbie. I've 65 GB to burn! Help
