would come out of Judaism? I tend to see Judaism as tolerant of other beliefs, and like other ancient religions concerned more about what you do than what you believe. They see Jewish laws as for their people and accept that others don't have to meet them all.

However a friend thinks that the rules of strict monotheism, and denial of validity of other faiths meant that the seeds of the crusades and the Taliban were sown by ancient Judaism. He sees it inevitable that as sects and sub religions emerged one would become violent and evangelical. Does Judaism hold the seeds of intolerance?

The Taliban are muslims who believe in the Islamic faith that has nothing to do with Jews.
It is a religion with it's roots in Baal worship that was established long before the Jewish faith.
The Canaanites and other surrounding nations were this religion they had nothing to do with the Jews. Later some of the Jews accepted this religion not the other way around.

Ruth 1:16*And Ruth proceeded to say: “Do not plead with me to abandon you, to turn back from accompanying you; for where you go I shall go, and where you spend the night I shall spend the night. Your people will be my people, and your God my God.

Showing a different religion as a different God. So they had many religions during the time of the Jewish faith. She had accepted her mother in laws religion and wanted to go with her.

Joshua 24:14*“And now fear Jehovah and serve him in faultlessness and in truth, and remove the gods that YOUR forefathers served on the other side of the River and in Egypt, and serve Jehovah. 15*Now if it is bad in YOUR eyes to serve Jehovah, choose for yourselves today whom YOU will serve, whether the gods that YOUR forefathers who were on the other side of the River served or the gods of the Am?or·ites in whose land YOU are dwelling. But as for me and my household, we shall serve Jehovah.”

The Jewish religion started when the people left Egypt, but as you can see even the Egyptians had their own religion established long before this time. When they entered this land the people there had their own religion. Why Joshua told them to make a choice, this new religion or the religion of Gods your fathers worshiped. They did not stamp out all these religions or even change them.
So they are still around today, in the forms of Buddhist, Shinto, and Islamic.

None of these had roots in Jewish faith.

It's not difficult for someone to find a pathway to justify evil deeds through any of the main religions. For one, they preach faith over evidence, and their holy texts claim that there is one true god, and pagans should be killed.

lol judaism tolerant of other beleifs? have you actually read the old testament?

Since religion is of human beings and since all human beings are under a corruptible influence , commonly known as sin then yes ,"inevitably" there would be a degeneration of relationships of every kind, regardless of what racial origin.

The question of intolerance, exclusivity ,and extremist behaviour is not confined to any particular religion or non religion. We all have a tendency to think we are right and all others judged to be deluded. We don't know who your friend is and what or who makes him play the arbiter in all these matters. Why take any notice, does he claim to be an expert in such matters?

We don't know what the rules of strict monotheism are either.

Either God is or He is not.
Monotheism is not a religion its a shorthand label .One that tries to pigeon hole people .
Nobody can worship and "ism".

So inevitability can only be framed in terms of prophecy. To those able to read the sign of the times its not awfully difficult to equate prophetic images to the 21st century with its shake down of the world and the moral decline and rise of violence and tyranny.

I think Judaism holds the seeds of eternal life not intolerance.
Unless of course we think intolerance of disease, oppression, poverty , injustice is "extremist".

We might just as well say that a surgeon is extremist and intolerant if he operates in strictly sterile conditions and using cutting instruments to dispose of cancerous growth.

People forget. Jews and Gentiles were trying to overthrow a tyrannical government.
