Was my joke corny or are the kids in my class just dumb?

Some black dude who I'm friends with is a real crack up in class sometimes.
In the middle of class he starting smirking at the teacher because she had said something out of place.
She asked him what the matter was and he goes like: "Nothing...I just get a kick outta you."
She looked at him appalled and offended. In order to take the focus off my friend's rude comment, I said: "Chris gets no thrill from champagne, professor."

Not a single person got the reference I was making to the Frank Sinatra song "I get a Kick Outta YOu." And nobody laughed. So needless to say, it was awkward.

quirky humor is usually over lots of people's heads. although i do think it's corny.

your story reminds me of the second time i realized i was getting old. i worked with a kid that had never even heard of the beatles. gawd!

the first time was when a child called me 'sir'. i was 19 at the time.

Just take it in stride and keep on enjoying your humor even if others don't get it. And it's not so much that people are dumb, rather they are sometimes uninformed or just choose not to respond.

I dont think those kids know that much about frank sinatra, that's why they didnt laugh. They didnt get what you were referencing. So it's just kinda, they didnt know what you were talking about;)
