Was this a big mistake from Ford?

Well, talking about Ford engines, when Ford introduced Zetec engines back in the late nineties in Southamerica, they recommended the same oil viscosity of the old Endura -15W 40-, even though both engines differ greatly in every aspect... What could happen to a Zetec engine if it gets 15W-40 oil, instead of 5W-30, considering that in some regions summer's temperatures normally climb well over 35° C... or maybe Ford did the right thing?
Thank you all guys for your opinions.

oil viscosity rating have a lot more to do with climate than with the engine that they are in. The location has a lot to do with the climate. Now... most of today's modern oils have a LARGE range of operable temperature range. For instance, I believe the 5W30 that I use in most of my cars is good to -35 and up to 125.
