What are some fishing tips you can give a newbie? (freshwater fishing)?

My friends and i are going to go fishing this weekend at a lake (Legg Lake). We don't have boat, so we'll be fishing by the edge of the lake. So I have a few questions.

1. What type of pole is the best to use? I have a spinning reel. Will that suffice?

2. What type of bait should we use? According to some articles, there are some bass, catfish, and crappie there.

3. When is the best time to go?

your spinning reel is just fine

minnows would be best, all of those fish eat minnows. worms would be ok too. although i have read that only smaller crappie eat worms.

early morning, evening, and after dark. but when you get to go fishing, is there really a bad time? seriously, this time of year, the fishing can be good all day. if it gets real hot, then stick to the morning, evening and night thing.
 
My son and I like the Trout Magnet lures! You can buy them from troutmagnetdotcom and some WalMarts have them as well. Watch the videos online how to use them. I have caught numerous nice small-mouth bass etc. on them. They work for lots of other fish - not just trout!. Good luck!
