Let me start by saying this is fiction, but wherever I look, I can only find mothers fleeing with children. This isn't the case in what I'm writing. Those that are trying to escape are two half brothers- one is 19 years old, and the other 6. It's their mother and father that they're escaping from. (Their father, a police officer, does most of the abuse. Both mother and father are alcoholics as well)
What would be their options as far as domestic violence shelters, possible foster care, or escape is concerned? As far as I know, shelters are wary about taking in men, even those with children that are trying to escape, so would the older brother be able to sign something giving up custody to surrender his brother (while not labeled his legal guardian), or is there some way to get completely around the parental situation?
