The longest I've known is Green Day. Well, there was this one episode of Jimmy Neutron that I saw when I was 5, Battle of the Bands, and when they performed in their garage, the song was Warning by Green Day, and I liked it, but never knew the name of the song or who it was by until years later.

Well i used to be into rap such as eminem. But thanks to playing guitar hero 3 i have found rock and heavy metal and expanded into a much wider range of bands from there. Just to name a few bands:
in to deep: sum 41 (from malcom in the middle lol)
all the small things: blink 182
when september ends: green day
one step closer: linkin park
thanks for the memories: fall out boy

Just to name a few.

Most bands I got into were bands I read about first in music paper.

ex:

R.E.M. via a review of "Murmur" in the Village Voice
Smashing Pumpkins via a review of "Siamese Dream" in Spin
Funkadelic because Robert Christgau rhapsodized about them
My Bloody Valentine from a NME article about "Loveless"
I read about XTC's "Skylarking" somewhere, when it was out

Bands I discovered via one song via the radio or something include:

The Beatles via "Yellow Submarine" (I was a toddler, this was around 1970)
Elton John via "Bennie and the Jets" (new single, I was a little kid)
The Rolling Stones via "Emotional Rescue" (it was their new single at the time, I ran right out and bought Hot Rocks, for the real thing...)
The Smiths via "How Soon Is Now?"
Brian Jonestown Massacre via "Not If You Were the Last Dandy on Earth"
Camper Van Beethoven via "Let's Take the Skinheads Bowling"
Patti Smith Group via "Gloria"
Oasis via "Do You Know What I Mean?"
Tom Waits via "The Clapping Song"
Verve via "Bittersweet Symphony"
Blue Oyster Cult via "Don't Fear the Reaper"
Uriah Heep via "The Wizard"
Grateful Dead via "Uncle John's Band"
Pearl Jam via "Even Flow"
X via "Los Angeles"

"Sgt Pepper" introduced me to the Beatles
"Tangerine" to Led Zeppelin
"Time Stand Still" to Rush

"Champagne Bath" and "The Cage" to Sonata Arctica - and those two were basically what got me into all metal, really. Once I started singing along and airguitaring to The Cage I suddenly found I loved all metal I heard.

BQ: The Beatles, by far. They've been my favourite band siince I was six or so. I was about eleven before I ever really listened to anything else.

Pink Floyd:
Another Brick In The Wall

AC/DC:
Let There Be Rock

Led Zeppelin:
Communication Breakdown

BQ: AC/DC

well rancid, sublime and nofx got me into everything i listen to now

Bohemian Rhapsody introduced me to Queen

Thriller introduced me to Michael Jackson

He ain't heavy, he's my brother introduced me to The Hollies

Little Willy introduced me to Sweet

Baby Blue introduced me to Badfinger

I pretty much 'discovered' these artists all at the same time. I knew about them but I had never listened to their music. Lol it's not like I DIDN'T know who Michael Jackson was.
