What causes my 2003 Lincoln LS to miss?

I have a lincoln 2003 LS V8. The coils all check OK & the fuel injectors are clean. Also there are no error codes but the engine misses every now and then. The Electronic Thorttle Control alert came on once but I stop turned the engine off & restarted the engine and the alert disappeared. What could be the possible cause?
