What do all the icons mean on my smartphone? and also why dont they include a simple?

guide in manual that tells you what each icon means? Isnt that a great idea? lol
seriously though, how are you supposed to know what every icon on android smartphone means???
its really annoying.. i have tmobile g2x running android and i have no idea what half the notification icons are telling me, --and how am supposed to know???
