what do i need to know to own a vacation home in lake tahoe?

i just love lake tahoe and always wanted to own a vacation home there. I saw alot of those vacation villas rent out to strangers online and it just seems to be a good investment since i can rent it out when im not using it. Other than to buy a house, where else can i find 'need-to-know' information for buying a vacation home? Does anyone own vacation home and rent out online?

Any suggestions are welcome.
