please help me understand the 2 important ideas that are expressed by each quote:

1. "He was almost bald but hadn't accepted the fact yet."
2. "The logging road hadn't been used since the previous autumn by the look of the heavy layer of leaves--a good sign."

3. "Soon I was slipping, in a zig-zag of course, across a huge beaver pond."

These quotes are from a story called Crabbe.
