Foodwise, you need to plan meals out or you'll end up with a lot of lame meals.
In general, it's good to get a large amount of rice, pasta, and/or potatoes.
A good quantity of oil and/or butter, too, and basics like salt, pepper, onions, and garlic (jar is fine). Good to get non-food necessities like ziplocs, foil, coffee (if you drink it), detergents/soaps, etc.
Aside from that, you just need to figure out what you like cooking AND eating. I can tell you now that the crock pot is an awesome invention for the newly domestic and can save a lot of time in the long run. A big crock pot of chili, for example, can last 2 people a week.
If you're new to cooking and all, definitely opt for frozen vegetables over fresh ones or you can end up wasting a lot of produce. Canned vegetables are disgusting, don't use them.
