What do you do with gold fish when they get too big for a 20G tank?

My friend got a small pond from home depot with a filter and put his in there. they have been in there for over 5 years now living happy in his backyard.

a wild lake? no! this is dangerous and illegal. you'll want a man made koi or goldifsh pond. try these...

schools
neighbors
garden store/club (may have pond, may sell them if you donate them, or ask for members looking for fish)
craigslist
freecyle
newspaper

You get a bigger tank...

Fancy goldfish need 20 gallons per fish, they can grow to 8 + inches. Common, comet, and shubunkin goldfish need 50 gallons per fish, they can grow to 12 + inches.

No, you shouldn't put them in the lake, they would die immediately.

Releasing any animal into the wild is very illegal. You should have researched the animal before you bought it. Not very responsible. Neither is your question about putting him in the lake.
