What do you make of this scientist's apocalyptic prophecy?

Lord Martin Rees is the President British Royal Society formed in 1660

He has beed awarded for his work & knowledge
Heineman Prize (1984)
Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society (1987)
Balzan Prize (1989) for High Energy Astrophysics
Knighted (1992)
Bruce Medal (1993)
Bruno Rossi Prize (2000)
Gruber Prize in Cosmology (2001)
Henry Norris Russell Lectureship of the American Astronomical Society (2004)
Lifeboat Foundation's Guardian Award (2004)
Royal Society's Michael Faraday Prize for science communication (2004)
Life Peerage (2005)
Crafoord Prize, with James Gunn and James Peebles (2005)
Order of Merit-the personal gift of The Queen (2007)
Caird Medal of the National Maritime Museum (2007)

Lord Rees has profound reasons for believing that civilization could experience “an irreversible setback.” A deeply thoughtful and broad-ranging scientist, he says that we have so many dangers ahead that he rates the odds of Homo sapiens surviving the 21st century as “no better than fifty-fifty.”

He has a book called 'Our Final Century'

If he's saying the species will probably be wiped out, he's thinking thats its DEFINITELY in for a culling

To anticipate any 'all generations think etc' answers, this guy is not a religious nut, population since 1910 has increased 400% to an unprecedented 6.7B and by 2005 2/3rds of natural resourses had been consumed

lol. scientists are always wrong at predicting the future.
remember when the oil was going to run out by 2000?
y2k?
etc...

they should stick to measuring things. leave the prophecies to god.

Scientists, as a whole, are really not even much good at measuring things. Show me a practical man and I will show you someone who can predict when our natural resources will run out.

I think that any thoughtful person, looking at both the developed and the undeveloped worlds, (to say nothing of the horrors engendered by the developing countries), must realise that to continue as we are doing is to court disaster on a global scale.

Unfortunately politicians, faced with the possibility of not being re-elected, dare not take the hard decisions which might help - and most people seem to believe that if you hide your head under the blanket the monster will go away.

I suppose the next question is would you sooner live through the nightmare or die in it?

People never seem to take into account the advancement of technology to find and develop new resources. It seems like everyone wants the world to end.

Look at it is way, which except to things we shoot off into space, and what comes back at us, all matter is constant, therefore, we cannot be losing anything, we merely just need to find reverse processes to use it again.

Science can predict many things, but is not always true!
Science can still be proven false even if its been known a fact or theory.
( evolution )
I like to hear the Bible prophesies and the scientific prophesies and compare them.
I chose the Bible over science any day.

Hi!

I think, even he's a scientist and not religious, to say the end of the world is near is only a hipotesis because there's anything material to prove it will happen, but still I agree with him and with you in the sense, worldwide populations has been increased irrationally so it brings serious consequences: less opportunities to go to school, to get a good job, to do something better in life.

I'm from México, and here the overview is not flattering at all. We are having a setback, people losing their jobs everyday, children selling stuff on streets, no good health services, not enough jobs, food or even medicine.

I think, we all have to "wake up" and do something for the world, and do it right now and not to wait to see what will happen.

I hope have been clear enough, I recognize my english is not very good ;)

Kind Regards :)
