What does a series 1 BMW state if owned and driven by an 18year old student?

It's not about me. In my college many students own expensive cars, yet even the owns that own cheaper ones such as the series1 draw attention as "rich boys". How come?
 
BMW is considered to be an expensive brand, much like Mercedes, Lexus, Audi, etc.

Even though the 1 series isn't as expensive as the 3 or 5, it's still a BMW.

It's a brand thing. It's like comparing Godiva chocolate to a Hershey bar.

You don't have enough money for a 3-series...And if I was an older adult I wouldn't drive a 3-series, it screams I'm trying too hard

edit: That being said, any car made by BMW is still going to be nice and somewhat expensive. The fact that their parents bought one for them and that they aren't driving a honda probably puts them in the "rich" category to the normal person.... By the way I am not rich, I drive a tahoe
