There are other tuning houses of Mercedes cars too. Often out-performing AMG.

Brabus and now McLaren (since the F1 relationship)

AMG had their origins in tuning Mercs for racing like European Touring Car Championships.

The letters "AMG" stand for Aufrecht, Melcher and Großaspach, Aufrecht's birthplace (but at no time an AMG location). In 1976 most of AMG moved to Affalterbach

AMG is a subsidiary of Mercedes Benz that produces their fastest cars. The letters stand for Aufrecht, Melcher and Großaspach. Aufrecht and Melcher were two of the founders, in 1967, and Großaspach was the town where Aufrecht was born.
