what does the number in brackets represent (torrents)?

i get the terms of what seeder and leecher mean but the number in brackets i don't get. i read it's something about a swarm?

so if the torrent i'm downloading is :

14(39) seeds 30(45) leechers -- what does this mean - and if there are 39 seeds how come i'm only connected to 14 of them?

i hope what i'm trying to ask makes sense.
