What format do downloaded videos have to be to be played in an IMAC OS? I cant...

...install Divx on Imac.? I want to watch downloaded movies on my used mac os computer that I just got... I can't install DIVX because I dont have the password! It says I need a password to install the software! SO I noticed that some music Vids I had on my usb did play.... But I want to watch some Episodes of Tv Shows in my room on that comp! How can I do it so that I can watch them? Wat Should I convert them to?
 
normally online movies are available in 'flv' format. so you've to use an FLV player to play this. Or you can use an FLV converter to convert the video format and use it in an Divx player. I'm using FLV to AVI Converter to do this task.
