What is a good camera for a novice? Most for outdoors/landscapes?

I have a simple point and shoot Fuji camera that is about 2 years old, good for the basics and day to day. But I'm going on a couple big trips and would like to get a more advanced camera to shoot some scenery, landscapes and building/ruins (Paris, Greece, Italy, Ireland). I'm willing to spend about $500 on a camera, but dont know the first thing to look for, do i need an SLR camera? Can you please help?

I have an old Fuji point and shoot too! http://www.flickr.com/photos/vichiousfishes/3729834910/in/set-72157622925076052/

I do not suggest getting an SLR for vacation photos. It will mess up your pictures more than help when you hit a switch and don't know how to put it back. A good bridge camera like my Fuji S1000 is more than anyone needs for vacations. just read some books from the city library to learn how to get the most out of it and I'm sure you'll be happy with the pictures you get.

you can get a Canon - EOS Digital Rebel XS 10.1-Megapixel Digital SLR Camera - Black for $500 from Best Buy.

Keep in mind that Photography is an expensive hobby and that is just a basic SLR.

An SLR is handy. I use a Mamiya RZ67 for landscape work.

That's in your budget.
