Hello, I am studying for the FCC technician exam and am looking at buying a radio once I pass. I have a subbasement apartment and probably can't set up an external antenna of any size, but might be able to use something internally by a window (or possibly up the chimney). So I am looking at getting a portable radio, one that I could use outside and take with me when I camp and all and am looking for suggestions. What would be a good power level for someone who wants to be able to hit the VHF, UHF, and HF bands (eventually)? Do the portable radios come with some sort of portable antenna? Am I even going to be able to pick up and transmit on these or should I just try to fumble around without a good antenna on a set station? Also, any recommendations on good portable radios for someone in the above situation? Thanks.
