What is broken on my car - PICTURES?

I was driving my car and I noticed white smoke. I pull over and check the coolant and it's completely empty. I pour some more back in the reservoir. I start the car and find the leak flowing out of a large hole on a piece of the engine. (you can see the bright green in the photos).
I'm not very good with cars.
Do you know what part this is? How much it may be to fix/replace. Sorry for the poor lighting.

It looks like you can see the thermostat through the hole. Do not run this engine until you get it fixed. It won't take 10 minutes to fry it. That's what I hate about Volvos. They run like a s.o.b. until something breaks and takes a half dozen other things with it. I'm not sure but the thermostat housing is probably plastic and i wouldn't be surprized if they don't have a technical service bulletin out to all the dealers about this very failure. The old TR7 was like that and they would ALWAYS break and fry the engine. Call 'em up and see if they're offering any discount on the repair. It's might not be worth fixing otherwise.
