In an attempt to save the “future of journalism”, Google has announced the release of Google One Pass. This system allows for a subscriber based business model for newspapers and magazines. Publishers can put content under a pay wall and offer a variety of subscriptions including day passes, pay-per-article and metered access.
Since Google One Pass utilizes Google Checkout, this is literally a plug-and-play option for newspaper and magazine publishers. The tricky part, as always, will be getting subscribers who are willing to pay for online content. With so much free content online, that is much easier said than done.
It’ll be interesting to see if Google One Pass will catch on. It gives the publishers a lot of power and it makes life easier for subscribers. The only potential flaw is the business model that depends on people to pay for content that may be available for free elsewhere.
