What is the difference between sending images via multimedia or via bluetooth?

Well, my friend was using my cell phone, and she saw a cute picture. She sent the picture to her phone via bluetooth. I never used the bluetooth way - I'm always multimedia. So what exactly is "bluetooth" (I thought/think it's a hands-free device) and do you pay extra by doing it? (And how did she send the picture through bluetooth if I don't OWN one?)

I've always used multimedia, so it was surprising when I saw her send it through bluetooth . . .
