...other than gas? This question is for one of my projects and it would be grateful if you could give me facts and sites to actual proves that it's true.

Main component? Cars need a lot of different components to function together to work, but from the rest of your question I'm going to say the internal combustion engine. You can run gas cars with very minimal conversion on natural gas and diesel cars with very minimal conversion on cooking oil (read about bio fuel.)
