What is the point of an aftermarket exhaust on a sport bike?

I am looking at buying a used sport bike (GSX-R600 or 750) and a couple I am looking at come with after-market Yoshimura exhaust pipes. Is there any reason to pay more for the bike because of this? I know it changes the sound of the bike, but I don't really care about the sound so what's the point?
Seller of bike says the yosh exhaust cost him $1,000 new
 
if it was properly insatlled then the fuel mixture has been richened up as well so it has about 13 more horsepower.
 
Most sport bike riders only put them on for sound, BUT....if they are coupled with a hi-flo air cleaner and properly jetted(carbed bikes) or have a Power Commander or similar fuel injection controller and PROPERLY tuned....will produce more horsepower and torque.....
Note that I said PROPERLY tuned.....JUST adding a muffler alone does not do much at all except make it louder.
 
Most folks claim that they get more power. It might move the power band up or down the RPM range, but few actually improve performance in the RPM range we ride in. It's mostly just about noise!!! Noise is a fatigue factor, and it draws the attention of police. Keep 'em as quiet as possible, ride faster farther, with less tickets.
 
I wouldn't pay more for a bike with an aftermarket exhaust.

upgrades to a bike are a "sunk cost." if the seller is so convinced that the exhaust makes his bike worth more, tell him you'd be happy to buy it for $XXX with the stock exhaust on in its place. Then he can sell his $1,000 yosh system for $600 or so, and make up the difference that way.

the fact is, he probably no longer has the stock exhaust, and he's not going to find ANY buyer willing to purchase his bike with no exhaust on it, so the yosh system is just part of the bike... his waste of money. don't make it your waste, too.

I don't mean to knock exhaust systems as a whole. My RR has a full Arata system - but it's also got a power commander, and I race my bike, so the extra 7hp and loss of 10 lbs in weight actually means something (sort of). really, an exhaust is a waste of money though. that 7hp and 10 lbs of weight loss doesn't make me near as much faster as simply practicing more would.
 
An aftermarket exhaust adds nothing to the value of the bike. In fact, if he does not still have the stock exhaust, you will want to pay less, because his pipe has probably detracted from the bike's performance.

I am reminded of MacBeth, Act V, Scene 5: "A tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing."
 
Louder is better... not too loud though. It may not be as significant on supersports where power is a plenty and stock exhaust is loud but I ride a ninja 250 and the two brothers exhaust definitely adds power and is the difference from being heard and seen or being completely invisible. On a gsxr I wouldn't say there really is a point unless you're going all out performance mods or you just like the sound.
 
You WILL care about exhaust note one day. You will get sick of hearing your bike sound like an asthmatic granny.
Aftermarket exhausts add very little to a bikes value.If the guy spent $1k on and exhaust, then it adds maybe $1-200 to value really.

I ride a V twin and an aftermarket exhaust is always first on the list for new owners. They dont improve performance but you have to hear a V twin as well as ride it (HD riders know what I mean).

If you can get a bike with with a good Yoshi exhaust, then grab it. It will save you buying one later.

Frankly,if you think don't get the point of an exhaust note, well, I can't explain it to you. It's just one of those things.
 
vtwin is right...and unless it's a really expensive pipe, the bike is probably worth more with the stock pipe on it.
 
Gawd they outta make em pass a test before they add exhaust ..rice rocket or harley... Truth is most do it for uh bragging rights and noise .. Most of the custom exhaust buyers don't care if they gain performance or not and it really don't matter all they know is what the guy that is selling the pipe to them says ... You have to tune a bike to a exhaust pipe .. right fuel air mixture .port work . high flow air cleaner and a cam to match the exhaust and a little extra compression won't hurt ..Other than that there is no purpose of adding a pipe to a sport bike that i see....
