my friend says it's just the cheap bimmer so everyone can get one, i think otherwise?

what do you think and why?

It's true, the one series is the cheapest of BMW's current line-up, but, that being said, they still sell for more than $30,000. BMW produces them because there are many people out there would like to buy a new bimmer, but can't afford a three series (especially young people who aren't as likely to mind the One's cramped dimensions). That is the largest demographic of the one series' buyers, I would guess.

Another group of buyers who should not be ignored, however, is those enthusiasts out there who very much like the idea of taking the three series' two burly engines and puting them in smaller cars. The 135i, for example, houses the same 300 horsepower, twin-turbocharged beast of an engine that's found in the 335i, but the 135i weighs hundreds of pounds less, so it is noticeably faster.
