What is the standard size for mountain bike pedal axles?

Just bought a mountain bike and broke one of the pedals. I left the bike at home (away at school) and plan to replace them but upon looking i noticed that there are different sizes. The bike is a Giant Boulder SE. Wondering if there is a standard size pedal axle and if something like 1/2inch is a special upgrade. I'm looking at a 9/16" pedal and a 1/2" pedal. I want to be sure i buy the correct size to fit the bike.
