OK. So I read this book, as a child at the library, many years ago, no idea as to the title, author, or publisher. I definitely read it before 1993, but it looked older. Probably from the 80's.

The storyline revolves around a planetary team continuing to research an inhabited planet discovered earlier with evidence of advanced non-human technology. A "gate" was discovered which allows one to step into a "different" planet. A small artificial universe with only one world. A planet with-in a planet. This planet is inhabited too and has lower technology, but certain devices are made with the ability to trap 'spirits'. These spirits allow devices to function like magic artifacts. One example, would be a functioning 'magic' carpet. The carpet looks normal but is full of circuits. If the trapped spirit escapes, it stops working.

As the story continues, the team discovers another "gate" within this inner world. This leads to a world within a world within a world. Here, there is no electrical technology. Just people who summon "spirits" and force them to do labor. The spirits/magic ARE the technology.

Anyway at a certain point the main character learns how to summon the main spirit/deity called the Gorgon or Demigorgon, if I remember correctly. Can anyone help me find info about this book again?
