What kind of fuel does a 97 BMW 316i use (Australia)?

Does it use premium unleaded or just normal unleaded. I know it would probably run better on premium, but I mean what does it actually need. Thanks.
I only got the car yesterday and before I ring the previous owner and sound like an idiot, I figure I will ask here, thanks.
 
all luxury cars are designed to run and perform better on premium unleaded petrol,however your bmw will still run on normal unleaded just not as well.......
