Is the sound that my car makes from the explosions inside the engine? Or does it come from the muffler. Like I know the muffler is louder when the RPM is higher, but where does the loud noise come from? I was wondering it the other day when I was driving.

the pistons and to a degree the explosions and all the moving parts likes the belts and fans and pumps

You are right - but it starts inside the engine. The combustion of the gasoline makes the noise. The noise, along with the fumes (exhaust) from the combustion, is routed through the exhaust, through the muffler and out the tailpipe. The muffler is there to quieten this noise but obviously it doesn't quieten it all the way.

This is why a different muffler will increase or decrease the loudness of a car.
