Just wondering since some military units focus on Hand to hand combat why wouldn't they be in MMA?

No military units focus on Hand to Hand, other than trainers. US Military Combatives (Hand to Hand) is pathetic at best.

I'm on a full time combatives team for the army. Our system, Modern Army Combatives, is based on Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, but also includes elements of Muay Thai, boxing, wrestling, even some stickfighting. It also incorporates some military specific stuff (weapons retention, arrest tactics) that have little use in the civilian world.

That being said, even a decent pro MMA fighter would own 90% of our team.

Randy Couture used to be in the Army, where he worked as a wrestling coach.

That's funny Hat, since Marine Corps Martial Arts Program (MCMAP) was developed and influenced by the MMA community and several Marines have been/are competitive within MMA.

To the OP, even with these programs in place it is beneficial to join a private gym and further training on your own.
