what the heck is DivX and how do I use it w/ Philips DVP5990?

I've seen a lot of torrent files and the like that say "divx" in the title. do I just download such a file and put it on a flash drive and plug the drive to the DVD player and follow the suseeding instructions? If not, I'd like to know what requirements need to be met b4 I can play a video file on the DVP5990...
