No one is ever too young to have a cell phone! My sister got her first cell phone when she was seven! Anyways, for you, I would recommend the SAmsung Gravity T! It is a great device with a resistive touch screen and a four row qwerty keyboard. I really love this phone because it has a qwerty keyboard and a touch screen and a bunch of great features without all those unnecessary required data packages. If you don't like touch screen then I would suggest the Samsung Gravity 3. It came out at the exact same time as the Touch one, and has all the same great features, but instead of a resistive touch screen, it has a numerical keyboard and a smaller non-touch screen on the front.

Ignore the person above me. Resistive touchscreen phones are HORRIBLE. Get the MyTouch 3G slider. It has the android OS (tons of apps like the iPhone), CAPACITIVE touchscreen (much more sensitive than resistive, typically higher quality), fantastic android gaming (scores really high on 3d graphics due to a non WVGA display), and much more.
